What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown; a number of factors may be involved, e.g. sun damage, genetics, abnormal immune reactions in the skin which lead to inflammation.

What are the treatments available?

Unfortunately you cannot stop the development of rosacea but there are treatments that can help ease the symptoms.

General Measures:

Avoid strong sunlight to the face as it is thought to make symptoms worse. Using a good sun block 30+ with UVA and UVB protection.

Avoid extremes of temperature, alcohol, strenuous exercise, stressful situations, spicy foods, and hot drinks as these can all precipitate the facial flushing.

Medical Measures:

Mirvaso is a gel that is applied to the face when one wishes to reduce the appearance of facial redness. The redness can be reduced and becomes evident as soon as 30 minutes after application and the effect lasts up to 12 hours. This gel works by reducing excessive blood flow and therefore reduces the redness.

20hours baseline

The active ingredient is Brimonidine.

There is a consistent efficacy with daily use for up to 1 year although one may prefer to use this on a when required basis. For the ladies, make up can be applied as normal over the gel.

Often rosacea is associated with outbreaks of pustules and may require a combination of treatments. In such situations Efracea is used. This is one tablet to be taken on a daily basis initially for 2 months and then as and when required.
